Temporary accommodation

Wherever possible the council seeks to prevent homelessness. If you have told us you are homeless, or at risk of being made homeless, your housing solutions officer will aim to make sure you have somewhere to stay while your application is assessed.

This could involve:

  • Negotiating with your landlord to allow you to stay beyond your notice date
  • Negotiating with family or friends to allow you to stay while we make our enquiries
  • Seeing if there’s anyone else you can stay with in the short term
  • Referring you to a hostel
  • Providing you with temporary accommodation

If you have nowhere else to stay and we believe that you are homeless, eligible for support and have a priority need, we may offer you temporary accommodation while your homelessness application is assessed.

If your homelessness application isn’t successful, you may be asked to leave the temporary accommodation.

You could also be offered temporary accommodation if you have been accepted as homeless and are waiting for a permanent home.

 Types of temporary accommodation

We use different types of accommodation based on the size of your household, any specific needs or vulnerabilities you have and what’s available at the time. This could include a temporary council property, supported housing, a refuge if you’re experiencing domestic abuse, or Bed & Breakfast.

Bed & Breakfast (B&B) is mainly used in an emergency where someone needs a place to stay immediately. Because B&Bs are already furnished, you can only take personal items such as clothes and toiletries. There’s limited availability of B&B facilities in Tamworth, so it’s possible this could be outside the borough.

We will always try to find the most suitable temporary accommodation for your needs, but it depends entirely on what’s available at the time and compromises may need to be made.

If you have any concerns at all about your temporary accommodation, please speak to your housing solutions officer.

More information about temporary accommodation is available on the Shelter website.
