A new junior parkrun project is calling for volunteers to help a youngster version of the well-loved national event off the starting line in Tamworth Castle Grounds.

Last year, in partnership with Parkrun and local volunteers, Tamworth Borough Council worked to set up a brand-new Tamworth weekly parkrun in the castle grounds. The event is now wholly run and managed by volunteers and is a huge success, with over 300 people joining the 5km run every Saturday morning.

Due to the popularity, Parkrun are looking to grow in Tamworth with a 2km junior parkrun for children aged four to fourteen years.

To help this take off, the council is calling for volunteers to turn those ambitions into reality, by assisting in running the local junior parkrun event.

The volunteer roles available vary from marshalling, timing and result recording, and all the behind-the-scenes roles too.

You don’t have to be a parent of a young person to volunteer, just a passion to be part of something new and exciting.

The new junior parkrun will be a FREE, weekly 2km event, and is planned to happen on a Sunday morning at 9am in the Castle Grounds.

The project is just one of the many supported by the council to encourage active wellbeing for all, with a programme of sports and wellbeing activities around the borough. This includes a free summer playscheme, football, tennis, swimming and outdoor sporting activities.

Councillor Sarah Daniels, Portfolio Holder for co-operative council, community partnerships and antisocial behaviour, for Tamworth Borough Council, said: “Parkrun is an internationally popular event and in October last year, we were delighted to work in partnership to bring the weekly event to Tamworth’s picturesque Castle Grounds.

“Due to its huge success, we are excited to continue to work with parkrun to set up a junior parkrun. All we need is the help and support of some weekly volunteers to get this off the ground.

“We’re working hard to help bring people of all ages together for regular fitness activity, and encourage more people into the town centre, which is a big focus for us at the moment. Supporting young people to get active is a key part to staying active and healthy as they grow older.”
